Recovering from a Spine Fusion Surgery

Recovering from a Spine Fusion Surgery

While many patients spend quite a bit of time preparing for spine fusion surgery and familiarizing themselves with what will go on during the procedure, many don’t realize that it is the post-surgical rehabilitation process that can often decide whether a surgery is successful or unsuccessful.

After a spine fusion surgery, which is a traditional open-back or -neck operation, patients should expect to remain in the hospital for several days. The hospital staff will not only want to make sure that you do not have a negative reaction to the general anesthesia, but they will also want to monitor the site of incision for signs of inflammation and infection. A series of X-rays will also be performed so that your surgeon can see if the hardware used for the spine fusion has shifted. It is likely that a physical therapist will visit you as well.

Once you are released from the hospital, it will be important for you to become active again as soon as possible, even if this means taking short walks or simply doing stretches in bed. Your doctor may supply you with a back brace and a prescription for pain medication. Remember that there is often muscle trauma involved in a traditional, open-back or -neck surgery like spine fusion, so recovery periods can be lengthy—some patients are unable to return to a full range of activities for up to several months or a year.

As with any surgery, it is important to gather all of the facts so that you can make an informed decision about your pain relief plan. You should also make sure that your spinal surgeon is extremely familiar with the latest, most up-to-date surgical techniques available.

If the arduous recovery process after a spine fusion surgery is deterring you from finding lasting back or neck pain relief, the surgical team at Laser Spine Institute (LSI) may be able to offer you an alternative. Our minimally invasive, outpatient spine procedures use gentle endoscopic technology to relieve nerve compression. These revolutionary, state-of-the-art procedures have helped thousands of people rediscover lives without pain.
